Without his Army records we cannot say where or when he was wounded, but the 7th Suffolks were in trenches close to Pozieres early in August 1916 . On the 8th August the Germans took Ration Trench, but that evening the Suffolks recaptured it and gained 200 yards. The Suffolks had 42 killed on the 8th but only 5 of the 7th battalion on the 9th
Dying of his wounds and yet having no known grave may mean his original grave was lost in later fighting or that his body was never recovered.

Fred Brunning is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial 1C/2A
